Ariel hadn’t been joking about not wanting to stop. It was nearly noon before he saw her glance at the clock. It was as though she thought that if she looked at it, she’d feel the time. She managed to keep going at her frenetic pace until one, which was when that venti whatever-she-ordered demanded its release.

She stepped out of the ladies’ room at a gas station and did a little dance in front of him.

He laughed as he pulled open a drink refrigerator.

“Two more hours until Memphis,” she said. “Another three to Nashville. Then three more to Knoxville. We can stop for the night there.”

Eight hours. Eight more hours in the car. The woman was nuts. At the speed she was driving, they’d probably be there in more like seven. The grace of God must have been with her because they hadn’t passed a police car or highway patrol vehicle in at least two hours.

He grabbed a couple bottles of water. “Well, those sound like pretty cool places to visit.”

She goosed his rear and strode toward the hot food counter. “Visit on your own time, buddy. Maybe you can take some camera phone pictures as we zip past.”

He groaned.

Turning, he intended to check the potato chip offerings but nearly plowed into a miniaturized Gulielmus.

What the fuck?

He managed to hug the water bottles against his thighs before they completely fell out of his grip.

Apparently, it was possible for a creature of over seven feet tall to shrink himself into a jockey-sized incubus.

“I hate this fucking form,” Gulielmus said with a sneer.

“I bet.” John edged around him and continued on his planned route. “So why are you in it?”

“Because a seven-foot demon is very visible, or haven’t you noticed.”

“I noticed. What do you want?” What the hell is a hot fry? John picked up a bag and studied the snack’s label, trying to ignore his father’s distress.

“What do I want? I want to know why you’re still tagging along with this one particular mark when there are millions of women out there for you poach. Want something easy? There’s a homeless woman in the alley. You probably wouldn’t even have to seduce her. She’d think you were an angel and just throw herself at you, looking to escape her mortal toil.”

John ground his teeth and nearly bit his tongue. It was sickening to think that his father would assert that a human being would have so little worth. “All right. You do it.”

“No.” Guileless seemed to grow a few inches and his blue eyes glowed pupil-less.

John took a step back, momentarily stunned.

But then annoyance filled in where fear had tried to creep in. He wasn’t going to let that creature bowl him over the way he had John’s mother. “Cut the horror act.”

“You need to toe the line, son. I’ve earned my stripes. If I take a woman, it’s because I want her and not because I’m meeting some damned quota. Maybe one day when you have a bunch of kids of your own, you can outsource your chores, too.
